Certificate III in Children's Services
To work in a child care or day care centre, employers usually require you to have, or at least be studying towards a minimum qualification of a Certificate III in Childrens services. After you complete your Certificate 3, it is highly recommended that you go on to do your Diploma of Childrens Services as this will make it much easier for you to gain employment in the child care field and it will also enable you to perform more supervisory tasks. Both the Certificate 3 and the Diploma are fairly basic courses and if you are unable to attend classes (because you are working full time or you have children), you can easily complete these courses by distance education (from home), either studying online or by correspondence (by post). When studying your Cert III online or by correspondence, you'll be assigned to a private tutor that you can contact whenever you need any help.
Often, because working in child care is considered to be a 'critical skill' in Australia, the Cert III in Childrens Services is usually covered under the productivity placement program as a funded course. To find a fully-funded or at least partially-funded placement, you will probably need to speak to several Cert III training providers as many will have already used up their funded placements.
The Certificate III in Children's Services is also a 'Centrelink Approved' course and therefore, you should be eligible to receive financial benefits and study supplements while you're studying the course.

Course outline: You'll study theory subjects and will also be required to do a 'work placement' of approximately 100-140 hours where you'll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a child care centre. Pathways to further study: After completing the Certificate III in Children's Services, you may wish to go on and study the Diploma of Children's Services (Early Childhood and Care) or the Diploma of Children's Services (Out of hours Care). What does the work placement involve?
